QUICK ANALYSIS

The Gators are going to finally be the Zook-recruited squad Ron has eagerly created. Ranking in the mediocre 50s on both offense and defense most of '03, Florida has had much higher highs and has also had many fewer lows to bring stability to the recently-lilting Gainesville gang. But there will be very little senior leadership on offense, so expect QB Chris Leak to step it up even more than he did in his surprisingly strong freshman campaign. The 12th-ranked (for pass efficiency) secondary's cupboard will be bare, especially missing Keiwan Ratliff's 9 INTs (ranks 2nd in the entire country), so follow this facet to see if the "Gator Nation" again chants for Ron's head on a stick as it did back in September. Bet against Florida to rank again in the top 20 for scoring allowed, as only three defensive starters likely return. At this juncture, 2003's three losses are by a total of 22 points. The Gators will be a difficult team to figure out considering Zook's top recruiting class from last spring. Will the youngsters step up quick and fill the large amount of holes left void by departing seniors? Expect performance inconsistencies to resurface unless the inexperienced defense can establish itself early. Most of the media has been clamoring about the bright future in Gainesville. Maybe so, but 2004 isn't that time with all of the inexperience on both sides of the ball.
