QUICK ANALYSIS

No more writing the Hawkeyes off after these last two seasons. Coach Kirk Ferentz has a knack for producing a winner regardless of the returning starters listed. Since Brad Banks and now Nathan Chandler have moved on in just two seasons, no one is quite sure what to make of the QB situation since no remaining QB has seen much action. Although Fred Russell departs from his RB position, Iowa will likely reload once again with guys like Jermelle Lewis. Having a healthy Ed Hinkel back at WR will also do wonders. 2004 looks to be a defensive campaign in Iowa City, as most all of the back seven return minus SS Bob Sanders. Each year, there appears to be a new LB step up. More important for this spring and summer will be hopes that some defensive linemen step up. Overall, the reload theory will get put to the test once again. This always appears to be the case for Coach Ferentz. He rarely heads into the next season with a huge handful of starters returning. Chalk up his ability to find victories to how he gets the right players into the right positions early, and this prepares them for when their number gets called.
