QUICK ANALYSIS

Cal currently represents the biggest drop of anyone in the final 2004 top ten. The Bears are the anomaly to the 2005 preseason equation. Which, interpreted, means you will find Cal anywhere from #8 to #25, depending on the source of ranking. With QB Aaron Rodgers leaving early, the job will likely fall to current top JUCO recruit Joseph Ayoob (San Francisco City College). The last time Cal went to the junior college ranks to nab a quarterback, it turned out to be Aaron Rodgers (two years ago). Such is the Berkeley system under coach Jeff Tedford. To truly discover the reason for such a drop in rankings, though, one only need look at the key losses. Is this a rebuilding year? The answer is both yes and no. New stars will have to emerge, but at the same time, this is a process coach Tedford has seen (and done well) a few times already. A foundation can be built around a senior OL that paved the way for J.J. Arrington and his 6.8 yards per carry. Of course, not many outside the Golden State had heard of J.J. Arrington prior to 2004. Or for that matter Aaron Rodgers. Hmmmm....see a pattern here? We do and won't be surprised when Cal quickly climbs.
