PLAYER: QB Brent Shaeffer
TOP
NEWCOMERS: QB Brent Shaeffer / RB BenJarvus
Green-Ellis
STRENGTH:
Univ. of Tennessee/JUCO transfer Brent Shaeffer
is being built as the savior of Ole Miss football...he
is shifty and quick and gives the Rebels an experienced
QB after being the first freshman QB to start
a season opener in the SEC since 1945 while playing
for the Vols; Another transfer will boost the
offense with RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who started
for Indiana two seasons ago...he could be the
biggest surprise in the SEC.
CONCERN:
The running game was hideous in 2005
(73.3 yards per game, ranked 116th); The OL is
in shambles as veterans and newcomers are being
swapped around in an attempt to find a descent
combination...Ole Miss will bonus from the hiring
of new OL Coach Art Kehoe who comes over after
putting 25 years in with the Miami Hurricanes;
The receiving cupboard is bare as the top gun
spent most of 2005 as a QB (Robert Lane).

DEFENSE |
BEST
PLAYER: LB Patrick Willis
TOP
NEWCOMER: CB Nate Banks
STRENGTH:
All-American LB Patrick Willis is the focus of
the entire defense after leading the nation in
solo tackles and being tabbed the 2005 SEC Defensive
Player of the Year; One of the few defensive bright
spots is the secondary...three of four top guns
are back after having a top rated performance
from a season ago (14th nationally in pass defense).
CONCERN:
Four graduating starters on the DL will prove
troublesome...incoming blue-chip players will
be called upon to boost a unit filled with underclassmen
with little to no experience; Lacking a weak side
linebacker; Overall depth.

SPECIAL TEAMS |
KICKER
Both Will Moseley and Matt Hinkle return after managing
to hit only 50% on FG tries. Moseley has a knack with
kickoff duties (SEC's best at touchbacks). Neither made
much improvement in the spring, which leaves the door
open for redshirt freshman Justin Sparks.
PUNTER
Rob Park seems to have won the job again although his
38.2 average is modest at best.
