2006 OFFENSE

BEST PLAYER: QB Paul Patterson

TOP NEWCOMER: WR Taj Smith

STRENGTH: Senior leadership at QB with Paul Patterson; quality depth at WR

CONCERN: An offensive line that struggled last season while giving up 37 sacks is unsettled with new faces; a RB by committee with no superstar, someone needs to emerge; Lack of overall speed at the skill positions.

2006 DEFENSE

BEST PLAYER: LB Kelvin Smith

TOP NEWCOMER: LB Jake Flaherty

STRENGTH: Veteran group of LBs led by NFL talent Kelvin Smith; Both CBs are seniors with Tanard Jackson being a candidate for post-season All-Big East honors

CONCERN: An underachieving DL that has been restructured with new personnel; Lack of a pass rush from the outside DEs; Nobody has stepped up to fill the shoes of the departed Anthony Smith at free safety.

2006 SPECIAL TEAMS

KICKER

John Parker was able to his 8-of-12 field goals from inside 40 yards a year ago. In the spring, Patrick Shadle proved more consistent. Both could see action.

PUNTER

If the offense struggles, a top-flight punter still exists with senior Brendan Carney, who was a First Team All-Big East selection last fall. He ranked 24th in the country with a 42.6-yard average and will also handle kickoff duties.
