* DEPTH CHARTS were only designed as a simplistic
gauge for listing players that departed and players that
received the most playing experience (consistent starters).
NationalChamps.net recognizes the importance of missing
personnel data not listed such as redshirts, transfers,
injuries, incoming recruits, back ups and alternates.
Their coverage will begin with our full 2006 Preseason
Preview due out this coming spring. |

QUICK
ANALYSIS
|
What
happened to the ’05 Redbird squad that looked
like a lock for their new conference’s guaranteed
BCS spot? West Virginia and an underestimated
South Florida team rudely interrupted UL’s
BCS dreams, so maybe the Big East doesn’t
lack the competitive edge many assume. With QB
Brian Brohm (his dad is the QB coach) back as
a junior and the entire backfield remaining intact,
the future looks bright in Derby-town. That is,
until you consider the losses on their lines,
which means that tilts with Miami and WVU could
easily be losses. New receivers look promising,
but departures on the DL (Dumervil, Stanley and
Harris are three of their top four tacklers) will
probably make for a slow start…how slow
should define where these guys will ultimately
land. But once UL gets going, the Redbirds will
again fly high into the rankings. After overlooking
USF (45-14 loss), Brohm led his guys to squashing
wins over Florida Atlantic (61-10) and North Carolina
(69-14) – this makes consistency a top aim
for offensive-minded coach Bobby Petrino’s
fourth season. Yes, this means Petrino’s
own recruits now come to peak fruition. Keeping
expectations down will discipline this group for
that needed attitude of taking one game at a time,
the only way the Papa John- (old stadium name)/Schnellenberger-
(new name) faithful will find themselves in a
BCS bowl of any sort.
