The word is that
Marcus likes to throw more than run.
No wonder, considering the wealth
of young talent the Hokies have running
routes.

The guard positions
are wide open and TE Jimmy King is
no longer available as a blocker/receiver.
Look for some shifts as new names
flux in this off-season.

* DEPTH CHARTS were only designed as a simplistic
gauge for listing players that departed and players that
received the most playing experience (consistent starters).
NationalChamps.net recognizes the importance of missing
personnel data not listed such as redshirts, transfers,
injuries, incoming recruits, back ups and alternates.
Their coverage will begin with our full 2006 Preseason
Preview due out this coming spring. |

QUICK
ANALYSIS
|
Frank
Beamer and his Hokies have but one major hill
to climb - beating a top five team while running
the table and getting a shot for all the national
marbles. The ACC title is just a part of the equation.
This is a team again capable of getting in position
to win one major game and claim an undefeated
season. If you are tired of hearing about Michael's
younger brother, prepare yourself, as Marcus is
set to return for his final (senior) campaign.
Yes, two main ball carriers have moved on, but
it makes no difference in Blacksburg. The Hokies
have been churning out multiple rushers during
every successful season, and Branden Ore and George
Bell are actually considered a better combination
than Imoh and Humes. The receiving unit has been
together (with great success) since they were
freshman. Now they are veterans, and the run dimensions
for Marcus become even more dangerous with opponents
attempting to cover the speedsters on the outside.
Coaches will have to work with the offensive line
before it can be considered a quality weapon.
However, Beamer and staff have managed to work
wonders with their OL, no matter who they seem
to have available. The defense will be typically
sturdy and likely to keep its usual Top Five national
billing. Every year a new pass rush specialist
seems to rise up. Now that Darryl Tapp is gone,
this dangerous VT position is up for grabs. LB
Xavier Adibi will begin to garnish second- or
third-team recognition on some preseason all-American
lists in just his third year. It will not surprise
us if/when VT ends up around No. 4 or No. 5 in
many of the August polls given the hype surrounding
Marcus. Some will continue to hold off until VT
shows they can beat those top teams, given the
dismantling Miami laid. This year’s bowl
game will likely go far in answering such expectations.
