The top four pass catchers are back in Austin for an encore performance. The LB unit also returns in tact, all hailing from the fertile recruiting grounds of the Lone Star state.

Defensive Back

Three of the top guns are gone. A question mark maybe, but with Mack Brown's recruiting success, a major concern would not be a fitting label for the secondary.

RB Jamaal Charles

DT Frank Okam

* DEPTH CHARTS were only designed as a simplistic gauge for listing players that departed and players that received the most playing experience (consistent starters). NationalChamps.net recognizes the importance of missing personnel data not listed such as redshirts, transfers, injuries, incoming recruits, back ups and alternates. Their coverage will begin with our full 2007 Preseason Preview due out this coming spring.

QUICK ANALYSIS

QB Colt McCoy is no longer looked at as a first-time starter. If this had been the case heading into 2006, the Longhorns likely would have been the No. 1 ranked team this past preseason. This time around, sophomore McCoy will have to operate with a few guns missing from his arsenal. Not many openings exist, but some heavy hogs on the front line move on. Jamaal Charles will get more of the carries now that Selvin Young is no longer sharing the RB duties. The WR group is as good as any Austin has produced in the past two seasons. On the defensive side, gone are two quality DEs, which makes promising Brian Orakpo the shooting star. The Lone Star State has become a breeding ground for LBs, and the Horns make good use of the local talent by returning all three of their local starters here. Although we will list the secondary as a question for ’07 (given the fact that guys like Michael Griffin - brother of SS Marcus, Tarell Brown and Aaron Ross will no longer be part of this group), too many athletes exist with Mack Brown's solid recruiting efforts to say this is a huge concern. Some may look at a No. 10 preseason ranking for Texas with a puzzled look. Truth be told, this team has as good a chance as anyone to compete for a BCS bowl bid. Their inability to solidify the 2006 South Division crown while finishing a mere 19th in the final BCS regular season poll makes the prognosis here not quite as elegant - a situation Texas fans should grasp with subdued enthusiasm seeing that the pressure (and targets on the chest) will not be as great as in ‘06.
