Brandon McAnderson carried much
of the load in 2007. Jake Sharp
got a good many carries and

DEPTH CHARTS were only designed as a simplistic
gauge for listing players that departed and
players that received the most playing experience
(consistent starters). NationalChamps.net
recognizes the importance of missing personnel
data not listed such as redshirts, transfers,
injuries, incoming recruits, back ups and
alternates. Their coverage will begin with
our full 2008 Preseason Preview due out this
coming spring. |

QUICK
ANALYSIS |
Without
a doubt, the biggest surprise of 2007 turned
out to be Kansas. Then-sophomore QB Todd
Reesing was not even projected to be the
starter heading into the season. All of
that has changed now. Reesing not only did
well as a first time starter, but he dotted
many of the 2007 Heisman ‘short lists’
at season's end. The question now remains...was
last year a one-time deal for Coach Mark
Magino and his team? The second most asked
question then remains (and directly pertains)...is
Todd Reesing also just a one-and-done wonder?
The answers are hard to determine. Kansas
returns the gist of a BCS bowl team, so
we know the talent is there for a repeat
performance. This time, however, they will
be a marked team with a much more difficult
schedule. South Florida joins the non-conference
list, and Oklahoma and Texas will be a part
of the league schedule as opposed to a season
prior - the ’08 Jayhawks get no easy
ride. In answer to the second question concerning
Reesing, he has proven to be worthy of retaining
All-Big 12 honors in a conference that maintains
(just about) the best collection of QBs
anywhere (Daniel, Bradford, Harrell, McCoy).
His receivers will be missing two of the
top three stat grabbers in Fine and Henry.
But the combination of Dexton Fields and
transformed QB-into-WR Kerry Meier is more
than qualified to fill the holes. Gone is
All-Conference RB Brandon McAnderson. The
OL returns four senior starters and gives
the new RBs a solid chance at a rebuilding
effort. Defensively, the Jayhawks are primed
to be one of the better groups in the Big
12 with so many upperclassmen peppering
the depth chart. Team leading tackler Joe
Mortensen solidifies an experienced front
seven which finished the regular season
seventh nationally in run defense. The biggest
"wait-and-see" comes in the form
of long-time starter Aqib Talib (All-American,
Second Team, AP) and whether he decides
to return for his senior season. He has
been a staple for this group while also
being gifted enough to line up at receiver
when needed. His knack for interceptions
is a big reason why Kansas was able to finish
tops nationally in turnover margin. Repeating
the success of 2007 will be more difficult
given the schedule upgrade, but with so
much experience back, they are deserving
of a top ten preseason ranking.
