Is there anything that Boise
State did not do really well
in 2009? Statistically speaking,
the Broncos can run, throw and
catch the pigskin, block, protect
the QB, cover and tackle. Ok,
so rushing opposing QBs is their
one marginal aspect, but still,
no team in the country will
return as many starters next
season. These were sophomores
and juniors that took Boise
State to another undefeated
season for head coach Chris
Petersen in 2009. QB Kellen
Moore (NationalChamps.net’s
2009 Underdog Award Winner)
proved to be the most efficient
signal caller in the country
in just his second year at the
helm. Two All-Conference receivers,
an all-conference running back
and an OL that led the nation
in fewest sacks allowed are
all back in the fold. The Broncos
also maintain a defense that
(at times) looks flat out dominating.
This team is just superior in
so many areas that it's hard
to continue keeping them from
Preseason Top 10 lists due to
playing in a supposed “weaker”
conference, and moreover, ignoring
the situation that awaits Boise
in the upcoming season. They
have proven to belong here time
and time again. Boise State
has performed masterfully when
even returning half of what
they will bring back. Ergo,
it's time to give this team
their due in the preseason as
a Top 5 team. Their marginal
conference (which constitutes
eight of Boise’s twelve
games) is the one thing that
keeps the Broncos from getting
the ultimate respect –
a No.1 ranking, and that perception
unfortunately will not change
week-to-week in ‘10. The
flip side – for the first
time in school history, Boise
State will open the season as
a Top 10 team (AP), maybe even
Top 5. With four undefeated
regular seasons since 2004,
the target on the Bronco’s
chest just got bigger than ever.
