EARLY BIRD 2010 COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW
RELEASED DECEMBER 2009
IOWA HAWKEYES
OFFENSE - 6
------RETURNING STARTERS------
DEFENSE - 8
KEY LOSSES
OFFENSE: Trey Stross-WR, Tony Moeaki-TE, Dace Richardson-OG, Rafael Eubanks-C, Kyle Calloway-OT, Bryan Bulaga-OT (NFL)
DEFENSE: A.J. Edds-OLB, Pat Angerer-MLB, Amari Spievey-CB (NFL)
Defensive Line / Secondary

Both running and throwing against this defense will be futile. Two of these defensive backs were All-Conference selections. The DL also remains totally intact. Adrian Clayborn is one of the nation's premier defensive ends, with the stats to prove it.

Running Back / Linebacker

The rushing attack might not be so bad if they can keep everyone healthy. The Hawkeyes ranked next to last in the Big Ten running with the football, a bad formula when looking ahead in this unflashy league. The defense should be fine, but losing big game LBs Angerer and Edds will be a huge hit.

WR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos

DB Tyler Sash

* DEPTH CHARTS were only designed as a simplistic gauge for listing players that departed and players that received the most playing experience (consistent starters). NationalChamps.net recognizes the importance of missing personnel data not listed such as redshirts, transfers, injuries, incoming recruits, back ups and alternates. Their coverage will begin with our full 2010 Preseason Preview due out this coming spring.

QUICK ANALYSIS

Iowa was just a few injuries away from being Big Ten Champions. If anyone is going to push Ohio State for the conference crown in ’10, it appears that Iowa is that team again. It says a lot about the Kirk Ferentz coaching philosophies when an offensive tackle (Bryan Bulaga) can be considered the star on this side of the ball. Getting 12 games out of QB Ricky Stanzi and RB Adam Robinson will go a long way in terms of offensive production. Given the incredibly sturdy nature of this impenetrable defense, Iowa is looking at another 10-win season and a return trip to a BCS Bowl. As the Big 10 currently sits, both the Hawkeye secondary and their defensive front play second fiddle to no other comparable units, not even Ohio State’s. Whereas Iowa may have been looked at as a bottom-tier Top 25 team heading into this last season, they should now be given serious consideration as a Top 10 foe heading into the next.
