OUTLOOK
Just what kind of coach can
Paul Johnson be at the BCS level?
How is this for an answer…he
has been at Georgia Tech for
two years (20-6), and in both
seasons he has been named the
ACC Coach of The Year. What
should scare the rest of the
league about the defending ACC
Champion is that the Yellow
Jackets are now in a far better
position in terms of personnel
than they were in 2008 when
Coach Johnson took over. This
team was primed to be a Top
10 preseason team before four
of the best players in the entire
ACC bolted early for the NFL
Draft. QB Josh Nesbitt continues
to lead this explosive option
attack while returning as the
team’s leading rusher,
passer and scorer. Replacing
former 2008 ACC Player of The
Year Jonathan Dwyer as the star
rusher will be former Louisville
transfer Anthony Allen. The
powerful senior has made a smooth
transition from A-Back to the
spot Dwyer held as the primary
option. Wide out Stephen Hill
steps in to replace Demaryius
Thomas as the downfield threat,
although replacing the skills
of Thomas completely is not
going to happen. The biggest
question is on the offensive
line, where Tech returns just
two full-time starters. The
Yellow Jackets seemed to adjust
well to former Virginia head
coach Al Groh's new 3-4 scheme,
but that doesn't mean it will
be easy to replace DE Derrick
Morgan, a first-round NFL pick
who led the ACC in sacks. DE
Jason Peters and DT Logan Walls
should be mainstays up front,
and LB Brad Jefferson is poised
for a monster year. The secondary
is experienced, but a playmaker
needs to emerge now that S Morgan
Burnett is in the NFL. Corners
Jerrard Tarrant and Mario Butler
each had two picks last season.
Some media members seem to forget
exactly how good a Paul Johnson
team can be with minimal talent
levels and Tech is far beyond
“minimal” in this
department. The ACC Coastal
Division is much more competitive
compared to just two seasons
ago, which only means people
will continue to overlook Tech
as a real contender again. That
would be a major mistake.
