2010 OUTLOOK
Never, in the history of the University of Oregon, has the Ducks' football team entered the first AP poll of the season in the Top 5 (AP poll started in 1936). Despite losing the Rose Bowl game to end the 2009 season, there was a great chance this team would have made that preseason ranking had star quarterback Jeremiah Masoli not been suspended for the entire 2010 season for disciplinary reasons. The first on the list to replace Masoli is Senior Nate Costa, who was able to play as a backup last season after undergoing major surgeries on both knees. He definitely knows the offense, and got a win in his only start -- against UCLA, when Masoli was injured. There is also Darron Thomas, a sophomore who was able to redshirt last season after being forced into action as a true freshman. He came off the bench against Boise State to complete 13 of 25 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Both fit the spread-option offense, although the quarterback run game might not be as emphasized. This is certainly a Top 10 preseason team for 2010 (the Ducks last AP Top 10 preseason ranking was at No. 7 in 2001). This offense has found its groove spreading defenses out and then running with the football. One of the main stalwarts responsible for making the ground game go, RB LaMichael James (2009 Pac Ten Freshman of the Year), is back looking for bigger rewards in just his sophomore campaign. He will continue to slash through holes created by an offensive line that loses no one. Coach Kelly is stacked with the right props to work his magic. With nine starters set to come back, the defense should be that much stronger, especially after the secondary spent most of 2009 trying to fill holes left by injury. The Ducks will be heavily favored to repeat as Pac Ten Champions; with a little luck, they may be playing for more in 2010. Stating that the loss of Masoli put a damper on national expectations would be an understatement.
