2010
OUTLOOK
Stanford sent notice last fall
that they plan on being a legitimate
contender in the Pac Ten race
in the foreseeable future. Losing
the key feature of this team
won't make the chore of competing
any easier. Heisman Trophy runner-up
Toby Gerhart won't be back to
carry the load, and what a load
he did carry. The offense won't
be as potent between the tackles
but the positive outlook predicted
for 2010 rests on the shoulders
of young sophomore quarterback
Andrew Luck. After a fantastic
campaign for a freshman, many
NFL scouts already consider
Luck a sure-fire future NFL
performer. He has a top-of-the
line arm and he is also the
team's returning leading rusher.
Even better is that he has a
veteran duo of receivers. Ryan
Whalen caught a team best 57
catches and Chris Owusu is capable
of going to the end zone on
any one catch. He took three
kick returns in for touchdowns,
which also places him on the
NationalChamps.net First Team
Preseason All-American list
as a kick returner. Also back
are four of five starters from
an offensive line that was one
of the nation's most dominant
a year ago. The Cardinal allowed
only seven sacks last season,
the second fewest in the country,
and also paved the way for Gerhart's
national-best 1,871 rushing
yards. No simple solution will
exist to replace Gerhart obviously.
Three players will get carries
this coming fall. Sophomore
Stepfan Taylor is a 213-pound
between-the-tackle rusher, senior
Jeremy Stewart is the 219-pound
veteran of the bunch and Tyler
Gaffney is a 216-pound fullback
type. You get the picture with
this bullish running system
Harbaugh has employed. Also
keep an eye out for one of the
most underrated fullbacks in
senior Owen Marecic, whose blocking
skills are unparalleled. He
also is a favorite to start
at middle linebacker.
Vic
Fangio enters his first season
at Stanford's defensive coordinator
after spending the previous
24 years coaching in the NFL,
including the last four seasons
with the Baltimore Ravens. The
Cardinal will make a switch
from a 4-3 base to a 3-4 scheme
in hopes of strengthening a
group that finished ranked 90th
nationally in total defense
last fall. They have a pass
rush specialist in end/outside
linebacker Thomas Keiser who
recorded nine sacks last season.
As mentioned, fullback Owen
Marecic is about to make a name
playing both ways and he is
joined at linebacker by Shayne
Skov, who came to Palo Alto
as one of the country's most
sought-after recruits. Strong
safety Delano Howell is a potential
All-Pac Ten candidate returning
as the team's leading tackler
and interception king. The secondary
was a mess at times last fall.
Plenty of players who saw action
in this secondary are back in
the fold but it seems they are
not quite settled in terms of
locating a cohesive set unit.
The
offense even without Gerhart
looks to be quite potent once
again. First, the defense needs
to catch up if they truly wish
to push for Rose Bowl honors.
Second, if Andrew Luck performs
as the media advertised this
summer, this could be the other
factor that gets them in the
race.
