Ten
starters return
from the nation's
No. 2 ranked passing
attack / 29th ranked
rushing attack.
This spread-passing
attack is devastating.
Weeden and Blackmon
are Heisman contenders. |

Defense |
The
Cowboys are not
capable of taking
a step forward until
they address the
issues on the defensive
side. The front
seven go through
a major rebuilding
phase and the secondary
has not proven capable
of slowing down
opposing passing
attacks. |

DEPTH CHARTS were only designed
as a simplistic gauge for listing
players that departed and players
that received the most playing
experience (consistent starters).
NationalChamps.net recognizes
the importance of missing personnel
data not listed such as redshirts,
transfers, injuries, incoming
recruits, back ups and alternates.
Their coverage will begin with
our full 2011 Preseason Preview
due out this coming spring. |

QUICK
ANALYSIS |
12/18/10
The proverbial balance of power
has shifted in the Big 12. Both
Oklahoma State and Texas A&M
together with their potent offensive
firepower make a great case
as teams ready to prove they
belong near the top of the rankings.
A large part of that case begins
and ends with what first year
offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen
has accomplished. After spending
time at both Texas Tech and
Houston, Holgorsen introduced
a new spread attack at Oklahoma
State. And boy howdy, did this
system explode. The nation's
second ranked passing offense
will be under the continued
guidance of unanimous All-Big
12 First Team quarterback Brandon
Weeden, a former 27-year-old
minor league pitcher. His ability
to pick apart opponents has
also allowed Justin Blackmon
to be named the Biletnikoff
Award winner as the nation's
top pass receiver. Weeden will
return, but the services of
Blackmon are already suited
for the NFL. Senior running
back Kendall Hunter regained
the Big 12 rushing title he
won in 2008. His replacement
Joseph Randle is a promising
sophomore who will keep opponents
honest for years to come. It's
hard to ignore a team that ranked
so high in offensive numbers,
which also brings back 10 of
those starters. The obvious
issue with OSU is on the defensive
side. The pass defense has been
highly susceptible and the front
seven, which actually did not
perform too poorly in 2010,
goes through a major rebuilding
process with new faces. Case
in point, the Cowboys had a
great chance in the regular
season finale at home to win
the Big 12 South Division. But
the Sooner offense put up a
whopping 588 total yards of
offense with 468 yards of it
coming via the pass. This offense
is good enough to outscore opponents,
but not quite good enough on
the defensive side to plant
them in a Top 10 preseason position.
