Offensive Skill Positions

Soon-to-be senior Stephen Garcia finally has shown consistency, making all cylinders fire on Spurrier’s offensive machine as rookie sensation Lattimore will keep defenses off-balance carrying the rock. Receivers Jeffery and Gurley both have NFL potential.

Defensive Front Seven

While the Gamecock run stopping efforts were tops in the SEC, they have to replace a great deal of talent. The stingy defensive traditions should carry on. The only quest is finding the right people.

CB Stephon Gilmore

QUICK ANALYSIS

12/18/10
Core fans who were tired of the recent second-half-of-the-season slumps endured under fabled Head Coach Steve Spurrier got relief in 2010. But, seriously, was it an aberration or something which diehard Gamecocks can look forward to more of in the next campaign? Our bet is the latter – seeing Spurrier’s latest protégé Stephen Garcia take a corner in regards to confidence and passing efficiency (ranked 84th in ’09, moved to 18th this year) meant a 5-2 close after going 6-12 in the second half of the regular season over last three years. We shouldn’t discount what true freshman and Duncan-native James Lattimore brought to the backfield with his explosiveness and soft hands, which will continue to make defenders key on him and will free up the fleet-footed Garcia. Experience in the sizable receiving corps and maturing youth on the OL means this will be a potent point scoring machine in classic Spurrier fashion. And the Ole Ball Coach will continue his SEC tradition of fielding an adequately stingy defense, but he will need to rebuild this front seven to some degree. The DBs offer experience, so maybe we can see the pass defense numbers improve. Really, it’s all good since the run stopping numbers – tops in the conference and ranked 9th nationally – speak for themselves results-wise, forcing teams to throw. Wins are wins, and the formulas found this season to get the Gamecocks over the psychological/mental issues which chronically plagued them these past several years mean a new dawn of South Carolina football awaits if Spurrier can use this pat hand to get another SEC title shot. No one should be very surprised that the rubber finally hit the road and the Gamecocks put an entire campaign together. It all makes expectations soar, so we’ll see how this team handles such pressures next time around.
