Defensive Backfield

The nation's No. 1 ranked pass efficiency defense only loses starter Josh Evans in the secondary. The players coming back are all juniors and seniors. This will be on tough unit to throw against, especially if the dominating pass rush continues.

Receiver

With all that Sunshine State speed the Gators have difficulty finding open receivers and downfield threats. Jordan Reed may be the nation's best pass catching tight end and Quinton Dunbar is developing into a main target. But there has to be more for the nation's 114th ranked passing offense.

DB Matt Elam
- declared for NFL -
* DEPTH CHARTS were only designed as a simplistic gauge for listing players that departed and players that received the most playing experience (consistent starters). NationalChamps.net recognizes the importance of missing personnel data not listed such as redshirts, transfers, injuries, incoming recruits, back ups and alternates. Their coverage will begin with our full 2013 Preseason Preview due out this coming spring.

QUICK TAKES

    12/18/12

  • The Gators are the first Sunshine State team in a very long time to place emphasis on a power rushing attack. It's working. Coach Will Muschamp's vision has now put his team into national championship contention, creating a new identity and leaving the Urban Meyer legacy in the past.
  • All-Conference running back Mike Gillislee has moved on. Next in line is big super stud soph Matt Jones at 6'2, 226 lbs. who brings an even more physical element to the rushing attack.
  • When Jeff Driskle is in the game Florida is a different ball club. But that is mostly due to Driskle's ability to move the pocket and run for positive yards with his elusive speed.
  • The passing game is another story as big plays downfield have been non-existent. Receivers have not shown the ability to get separation and the pass blocking needs major improvements too. Keeping top pass catcher Jordan Reed at tight end will help to alleviate the growing pains.
  • The Florida defense takes a back seat to no one in a defensive heavy conference. The Gators tend to utilize more nickel back sets and they remain strong against both the pass and the run.
  • Defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd and safety Matt Elam are ready to start in the NFL right now. Linebacker Jelani Jenkins isn't far behind.
  • The formula for getting to a BCS Championship Game is great defense, great running game and protect the football. This squad does all three very well.
