Charleston Southern has a new helmet design in 2013, while Presbyterian and Coastal Carolina have both made stripe-related changes to their helmet designs for the 2013 season (all shown above).

Historical Helmets

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

1991 1992 - ? ? - 1999?
2000? - 2002 2003 - 2012 2013 -

The first Charleston Southern varsity football team played in 1991, and this is believed to be a complete set of historical helmets for this team. I would appreciate clarification of the dates of use for these helmet designs.

COASTAL CAROLINA

October 8, 2011 2009 - 2012 2003 - 2009; 2013 -
*see note 1 below *see note 2 below

2003 was the first year of play for the Coastal Carolina team.

*1 During CCU's 2011 home game against VMI several changes were made to the team's helmets; the following paragraph describing those changes appeared at the team's web site: "The Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics will continue two traditions this weekend: honoring our heroes - those who have and/or continue to serve our country, state and community - and participating in National Breast Cancer Awareness month. The football team will don camouflage Chanticleer logos and have camouflage in the center stripes - in honor of the military. The Chanticleer decals will have a pink outline and a pink ribbon will be placed on the back of the helmet - in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The camouflage decals were designed by current Coastal Carolina student, athletics marketing student assistant and The Chanticleer art director Ryan Cirignano, who spent four years in the U.S. Navy where he was an operations specialist, third class."

*2 Helmet stripes were not used during CCU's first game of the 2009 season (September 3rd at Kent State) but they were in place during the second game (September 12 vs Monmouth (NJ)).

GARDNER-WEBB

1993 1998 - 1999 2000 - 2007
2008 - 2011 2012 -

This team has a very large and interesting set of historical helmets in addition to the ones shown here, but I have received a great deal of conflicting information about when each design was in use, and very few of the helmet logos, which I will of course need in order to add these helmets to the web site.

LIBERTY

1973 - 1975? c.early 1980s 1988
*see note 1 below
1989 - 1990 1992 1994 - 1999
2000 2001 - 2003 2004 - 2005

2013 - 2013 -

This university's first football team played in 1973, but at that time the school's name was Lynchburg Baptist College and the school colors were gold and green. In 1976, the name was changed to Liberty Baptist College and blue, red, and white were adopted as the school colors. The team was affiliated with both the NAIA and NCAA for a few years before switching solely to NCAA Division II in 1983. The school was renamed Liberty University in 1985 and, in November of that year, its campus endured a devastating flood which washed away the football team's practice facility, leading to the cancellation of its late-season schedule. A move to NCAA Division I-AA was made in 1988.

The team has apparently had many other helmet designs through the years. I have partial information for a few other helmet designs used by Liberty in the past; photographs of these would be greatly appreciated:

*1 The stripe sequence on this helmet went (from left to right) blue-white-red.

*2 Worn during the 2010 home game against Stony Brook.

PRESBYTERIAN

? - 1995 1996? - 2003 2004 - 2006
2007 - 2012 2013 -

An earlier helmet design (c.early-mid 1990s) has been described as featuring a blue "P" that was a "lot thicker" than the letters on the current helmet. I have never received any information about earlier helmet designs used by this team.

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

? - 1965 1966 1967 - 1968
1969 1970 1971
1972 - 1975 1976 1977 - 1981
1982 - 1984 1985 - 1988 1989 - 1992
1993 1997 1998
1994 - 1996; 1999 - 2009 2010 -

For the time period covered by this web site (1960 to present) there are four other "known" VMI helmet designs which I have not yet been able to depict, due to insufficient information. Below are photographs of these four:

The 1969 helmet was apparently identical to the 1968 helmet except that a version of the "100" college football centennial logo was worn apparently on both sides. The photograph above is the clearest one I have seen of this helmet, and it is obviously not sufficient to reveal the color of the football-shape, though it appears to be either blue or black rather than red.

I am unsure about the helmet shell color and the middle stripe color of the 1970 helmet, though the "VMI" logo and two outer stripes were almost certainly red in color. I believe that the shell color was probably white in 1970.

The 1976 helmets were red with one white central stripe and a logo consisting of a white oval-shape containing a "flag". The flag does not appear to be a correct USA flag, as there appears to be only a single star in the canton. I would appreciate clearer photographs of this one and an explanation of the flag.

The 1997 helmet featured an intricate "VMI" logo worn on white helmets shells; I will need a copy of the logo in order to add this one to the web site. A larger and clearer photograph would also be helpful.
