Some earlier Bates helmet designs have been described as follows: during the 1980s the team used white helmets with red facemasks and with an underlined, script "Bates" logo (color unspecified)
; in 1992 the facemask color changed to black and a new logo was adopted - a black "B"; this design was reportedly used until 1998.
