Comments

Frostburg State, Southern Virginia and Christopher Newport used new helmet designs in 2017 (shown above). Rowan returned to an older design last used by the team in 2004..

Historical Helmets

CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT

2001 - 2009? 2010 - 2013 2014
*see note 1 below *see note 1 below
2015 - 2016 2015 -
*see note 2 below

2001 was the first year for the CNU football team.

*1 For the period 2001 through 2010 on both of these helmets a different logo was worn on the right sides - a group of three triangles representing a ship's sails (helmet image below). Beginning in 2011 the "CNU" logo was worn on both sides of the helmet.

*2 This design has large uniform numerals on its left side only; the right side has a "CNU" logo (as shown below).

COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY

1999 only(?) ? - 1998?; 2000 - 2010 2011
*see note 1 below
2012 2013 2014 -

*1 The logo on this helmet commemorates the team's 75th anniversary and was presumably used only during the 1999 season.

FROSTBURG STATE

2005 (first game only?) ? - 2006 2007 - 2010
2011 2012 - 2013? 2014? - October 27, 2017
*see note 1 below
November 4, 2017 -
*see note 2 below

Photographs from From Frostburg State's first game of the 2005 season vs. The Apprentice School show the team wearing plain black helmets, but it was reported to me that the team was soon thereafter using the "paw" decals once again.

*1 In 2014 the helmet numerals were apparently worn only on the left side of each helmet, with the right side being left "blank". Apparently during most games from 2015 to 2017 the red "paw print" logo was worn on the right side.

*2 The left side of this design is "blank" but a "paw print" logo is worn on the right side (as represented below).

KEAN

2000 - 2002? 2006 (first game?) 2010
2006 - 2009; 2011 - 2012 2013 2014
*see note 1 below
2015 -

Kean adopted a new helmet design in 2003, shown in the photograph below. Two slightly different logos were visible on the left sides of different players' helmets, but I do not yet have a copy of either of these, which I will need before I can add this one to the web site. This logo was apparently still in use in both 2004 and 2005, though the letters "KU" appeared to be white rather than light blue in the more recent photographs.

*1 The 2013 Kean helmet design had uniform numerals on its left side only; the right side had a "KEAN"/claw logo (as represented below).

MONTCLAIR STATE

c.1985 - c.1988 ? - 2004 2005 -
*see note 1 below

*1 The word above the circle on this helmet is "INDIANS", which was the team nickname at the time.

ROWAN

1972 - 1983 1984 - 1986 1987
1988 - 1989 1990 1991 - 1992
c.1990s ? - 2003; 2005 2006 - 2009
2010 - 2012 October 27, 2012 2013
*see note 1 below *see note 2 below
2014 2015 - 2016 2004; 2017 -

Rowan University was previously named Rowan College of New Jersey (from 1992 to 1997) and Glassboro State College (prior to September 1, 1992).

*1 Worn during at least one game in 2012 (October 27 vs Morrisville State).

*2 In 2013 uniform numerals were worn only on the left side of each helmet; on the right side was worn the same "RU" + "owl head" logo which was used the previous year.

SALISBURY

1999 - 2003 2004 - 2005 2006 - 2010
2011 -

The next older helmet for Salisbury preceding those shown here (used from ? - 1998) has been described to me as having a maroon shell, gold facemask, and a large script "S" decal.

SOUTHERN VIRGINIA

2003 2004 2005 (mid-late season)
2005 (early season); 2006 - 2009 2010 - 2013 2014 (first 6 games)
October 25, 2014 -
2015
2016 2017 -

2003 was the first season of football for Southern Virginia. The above helmet designs are all of the different ones used by the team since its formation, to the best of my knowledge.

WESLEY

? - 2003 2004 -

WILLIAM PATERSON

? - 1999? 2003 - 2004 2000? - 2002; 2005 - 2008
*see note 1 below
2009 - 2012 2013 - 2015 2016 -

*1 It was reported to me that this design was also in use around the years 1989 and/or 1990.
