Comments

Lock Haven and Shippensburg have new helmet designs for the 2011 season (shown above).

I have received very little information about historical helmets for these teams - any information for helmet designs used since 1960 would be appreciated.

Historical Helmets

BLOOMSBURG

? - 1999? 2000? - 2003 2004 -

It has been reported to me that the team used maroon helmets with a gold "BU" logo from 1983 through 1985, and a "BU" with "streaks behind it" from 1986 through 1991.

CALIFORNIA

? - 2004 2005 -

CHEYNEY

c.late 1990s 2002 - 2004 2004 - 2008
*see note 1 below
2009 -

During at least the 2001 season, Cheyney apparently used a helmet logo that was very similar to the one shown on the first helmet above, but with a white "CU" added to the logo.

I received a report prior to the start of the 2005 season indicating that Cheyney would be using a "C" logo that year, similar to the one used by Connecticut, but no photographs were ever provided showing such a decal, and the only photograph that I ever saw from the 2005 season showed the team using "plain" helmets without any side decals.

Descriptions (but not photographs) have been received for a couple of earlier helmet designs. In the mid-1970s the team was using white helmets with the school name in blue letters on the sides, and a blue/white/blue stripe sequence. Another design was similar but with a blue "wolf head" logo replacing "Cheyney". During the early 1990s the team was again using white helmets with a blue "wolf head" logo.

*1 The team used plain blue helmets during at least one game of the 2004 season (vs. Lock Haven) and at least one game in 2005 (vs. Bloomsburg).

CLARION

C.W. POST

? - 2009 2010 -

EAST STROUDSBURG

? - present

EDINBORO

1999 2000 - 2005 2006
2007 -

The helmet design in use during at least the 1990 and 1991 seasons has been described to me as consisting of a burgundy shell with a white faceguard, and with the team name "Scots" on the sides in a cursive style; but a contradictory report indicated that the helmets used from 1989 through 1992 were "cardinal" in color, with "Scots" in "block"-style letters. No photographs were provided to accompany either of these reports.

GANNON

? - 2005 2006 2007 - 2009
2010 -

INDIANA

? - 2006 2007 2008 -

Indiana's team was known as the Indians prior to the 2007 season.

KUTZTOWN

? - 2003 2004 - 2005 2006
2007 -

LOCK HAVEN

? - 2000? 2001? - 2002 2003 - 2004
2005 - 2006 2007 - 2008 2009
2010 2011 -

In 2009 Lock Haven used to white helmets with "wing" logos on the sides (photo below). The decals appear to be similar to ones used by other teams in recent years, though with some slight differences - in particular, the "wings" appear to be longer. I would appreciate a copy of one of these wing decals. A much larger and clearer photograph would also be helpful.
