XFL's inaugural 2020 season was ended prematurely by the global Covid-19 pandemic after five weeks of play (twenty total games were played). Thereafter the league filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April 2020 and its assets were eventually sold to new ownership. A complete second XFL season was played in 2023, with the Arlington Renegades winning the championship game against the DC Defenders. Shown above are the helmet designs used in 2023; a non-symmetric design was introduced for the Houston Roughnecks; below is a depiction of the right side of this design.
On September 28, 2023 XFL announced its intention to merge with the USFL.
