2002 Outlook

Offensively, Hawaii looks to be in great shape once again as long as Timmy Chang can stay healthy at quarterback. He showed glimpses of great promise in his 2000 freshman campaign while starting, until getting knocked out with the wrist injury last year. His task will be more difficult with the new look receiver department. However, a fireworks display on the big island is something that should continue under the direction of Head Coach June Jones. What else is new? The fireworks display just might not be of the grand finale set just yet. It is no secret that Hawaii is losing football games with defense, but look for this side of the ball to create a little more havoc with opponents as opposed to year's gone by. The front half of the group is much stronger. If the Warriors have an Achilles Heel, it will be defending the deep ball with a need for new safeties. High scoring affairs are par for the course in 2002, making those east coast early Sunday morning games something to behold for the college football junkie. A typical 13 game schedule exists on this rim of the Pacific, nothing new for Aloha Stadium. A repeat of last season's 9-3 season isn't too far off. With the new ConAgra Foods Hawaii Bowl on December 25th, the Warriors are certain not to be sitting at home for the holidays…or will they (so to speak)?

2002 OFFENSE

Exit pass happy Nick Rolovich, who threw for a school record 336 yards per game in 2001; enter Timmy Chang, who was granted a medical hardship after starting 12 games for the Rainbow Warriors prior to a wrist surgery that sidelined him last fall. Chang sat out this spring but should return. Three of his top four go-getters at receiver have moved on, most notably, Ashley Lelie, who skipped off to the NFL. Only one returning starter is back with Justin Colbert, but high hopes remain for superb young kick returner Chad Owens, who also doubles at receiver. His speed will help keep defenses on their heels. Hawaii is not exactly known, as of recent years, for pounding the ball down the field via the rushing attack. The running back duo of Mike Bass and Thero Mitchell isn't a bad situation for improving on this aspect. Two holes must be filled up front on the line and some shifting has been done to accommodate certain positions in the wall. The steady deeds of All-American Candidate Vince Manuwai will be the backbone for this unit.

2002 DEFENSE

Hawaii will take its biggest hit in the secondary where the loss of both safeties provides quite a dilemma. A night and day analysis exists in the backfield however, as the daylight shines on both returning corners. There is depth as well as experience at this spot. All three players who started games at the cornerback positions returned in the spring. The most promising unit appears to be the linebacking crew as four key contributors, including first team All-WAC member Chris Brown, are back in the middle anchoring the defense. Brown started all 12 games while amassing a team high 124 tackles. The front wall lost two key contributors who later went on to play in the Hula Bowl. The special teams are in great shape as each key position brings back solid contributors. Field position should not be a problem with sophomore All-American Chad Owens returning kicks for touchdowns.
