JUCO
transfer
Cameron
Newton
exceeded
all
the
grand
expectations
by putting
up 357
yards
of total
offense
and
set
the
Tigers'
record
for
rushing
yards
by a
quarterback
after
he finished
with
171
yards
in the
Tigers’
opener.
His
speed
was
evident
and
he seems
to be
a perfect
fit
for
this
quick
strike
offense.
True
freshman
tailback
Michael
Dyer
also
made
a splash
in his
debut
rushing
for
95 yards.
This
backfield
is deep
and
the
offensive
line
looks
solid
just
as advertised.
Where
Auburn
will
have
troubles
in on
the
defensive
side.
The
Auburn
defense
wasn't
supposed
to be
any
worse
than
it was
in 2009,
when
it set
a program
record
for
the
most
points
allowed
in a
season.
Yet
it was
tough
to find
reasons
for
optimism
after
the
Tigers
surrendered
366
yards
of offense
to Arkansas
State,
a middle-of-the-pack
Sun
Belt
team.
There
were
plenty
of missed
tackles
and
missed
assignments
that
will
simply
be more
exploited
when
the
competition
increases.
The
added
bodies
from
a deep
freshman
class
helped
the
Tigers
stay
fresh,
but
it didn't
do much
for
the
results.
The
question
for
Mississippi
State
heading
into
2010
was
how
it was
going
to replace
Anthony
Dixon's
1,391
rushing
yards
from
last
fall.
This
answer
is far
from
being
solved.
The
passing
of quarterback
Tyler
Russell
lessened
the
relevance
of this
factor
however.
Coach
Mullen's
two-quarterback
rotation
may
have
found
a full-timer
in Russell
after
he lit
up the
Memphis
secondary
last
weekend
going
13-of-16
for
256
yards.
He has
also
found
a good
target
in receiver
Brandon
Heavens
that
bodes
well
for
finally
getting
some
respect
on the
outside
from
opponents.
Starkville
is a
tough
place
to win.
Expect
a ton
of points
out
of these
two
and
a possible
upset
in the
making.
If the
same
Auburn
defense
shows
up this
normal
defensive
struggle
becomes
a shoot
out.

This
is a
major
battle
between
two
SEC
rivals
coming
off
impressive
opening
day
victories.
Georgia
got
the
job
done
with
a redshirt
freshman
quarterback
in Aaron
Murray
who
was
without
his
top
rusher
(Washaun
Ealey)
and
top
receiver
(A.J.
Green).
He was
still
able
to connect
with
10 different
receivers
in his
first
start
and
even
scrambled
for
42 yards
against
Louisiana-Lafayette.
Ealey
will
be back
in this
one
but
A.J.
Green
may
not
still
be available
until
the
NCAA
can
clear
his
alleged
agent
dealings
from
the
summer.
The
Georgia
defense
under
new
coordinator
Todd
Grantham's
3-4
scheme
faired
quite
well
too
finishing
with
three
sacks
and
three
interceptions.
The
difference
in South
Carolina
this
year
starts
with
Stephen
Garcia
behind
center.
After
getting
criticized
for
his
commitment
level
last
fall,
the
junior
has
worked
hard
and
looked
quite
confident
in the
game
with
Southern
Miss.
He also
now
has
a weapon
out
of the
backfield
as freshman
running
back
sensation
Marcus
Lattimore
gives
South
Carolina
something
they
have
been
missing
in the
rushing
department.
Spurrier
honestly
believes
his
Gamecocks
can
compete
for
the
SEC
East.
So does
Georgia.
If the
Gamecocks
can
continue
to run
and
pass
the
ball
equally
well,
they
could
be ready
to make
a move,
as the
defense
should
again
rank
with
the
best
in both
the
league
and
nation.
This
one
is major
because
it determines
who
will
be chasing
a lesser-perceived
Florida.
The
odds
favor
the
home
team.

First

USF

Skip
Holtz
gets
his
first
major
exam
traveling
to Gainesville.
At least
he has
an experienced
quarterback
in B.J.
Daniels
who
showed
poise
and
discipline
last
week
going
15-of-23
passing
with
no interceptions.
But
that
was
against
FCS
level
opponent
Stony
Brook.
Former
back
up quarterback
Evan
Landi
is making
a name
at receiver
and
this
is a
running
back
by committee
approach
with
three
different
players
seeing
carries.
The
Bulls
have
a nice
cornerback
combo
and
a sturdy
set
of linebackers.
But
they
are
missing
two
NFL
pass
rushers
without
George
Selvie
and
Jason
Pierre-Paul.
Florida's
offense
is going
to be
just
fine.
Despite
multiple
bad
snaps,
fumbles
and
dropped
passes
the
talent
level
here
is extremely
on the
high
side.
Running
back
Jeff
Demps
is one
of the
fastest
players
in the
country
with
the
ball
in his
hands
as evident
in his
72-yard
TD gallop
last
week
that
broke
the
game
with
Miami
of Ohio
open.
Florida's
secondary
is phenomenal.
Three
players
recorded
picks
last
Saturday
and
the
inside
of the
defensive
line
is so
very
deep.
This
is a
wake
up game
for
the
Gators
to prove
they
are
much
better
than
the
score
indicated
last
week.
The
blunders
cost
them
quite
a few
spots
in the
AP Poll.
South
Florida
might
have
matched
up with
FSU
last
year
but
this
is a
different
animal
(or
reptile).
Gators
win
big
and
fix
many
of the
offensive
miscues.

This
is a
huge
gauge
for
both
teams.
For
the
Seminoles,
aside
from
facing
a top
10 program
on the
road,
the
game
will
also
pair
FSU's
new
defensive
coordinator
Mark
Stoops
against
his
older
brother,
Oklahoma
head
coach
Bob
Stoops.
Defense
is where
FSU
had
to make
some
improvements.
Rumors
and
talk
of this
defense
being
much
more
maligned
was
evident
in the
opener
with
Samford.
Slowing
down
this
Sooner
offense
led
by Heisman
Candidate
DeMarco
Murray
at running
back
with
tell
the
real
tale.
He rushed
for
218
yards
on 35
huge
carries
against
Utah
State.
The
Florida
State
offense
looks
poised
with
Christian
Ponder
behind
center.
He looks
like
a senior
should,
making
throws
with
confidence
and
he has
one
of the
best
offensive
lines
in the
ACC.
The
Sooners
struggled
horribly
last
week.
The
34-point
favorite
got
torched
as Utah
State
averaged
20 yards
per
completion
and
rolled
up 421
yards
of total
offense.
They
gave
up way
too
many
big
plays.
On offense
the
Sooners
need
some
help
other
than
from
Murray
and
receiver
Ryan
Broyles.
Quarterback
Landry
Jones
had
a real
bad
start
to the
season
tossing
two
interceptions
and
completing
less
than
50%
of this
passes.
Oklahoma
won’t
take
FSU
lightly.
Expect
major
improvements
and
corrections
for
this
week.
FSU
has
a shot
though
if they
can
continue
to play
error-free
football.
Ponder
is a
much
better
passer
than
what
Utah
State
offered.
If the
same
Sooner
team
shows
up,
FSU
wins
by two
touchdowns.
Don't
expect
this
to be
the
case.
Sooners
take
care
of business,
but
are
not
good
enough
to put
this
one
away
by a
large
margin.

Ohio

FL 20
This
one
has
huge
ramifications
at all
levels.
Besides
the
fact
that
Ohio
State
is favored
to get
to the
national
title
game,
two
Heisman
quarterbacks
going
head-to-head
might
be the
headline
here.
But
there
are
plenty
of other
intriguing
match
ups
to watch.
Running
a no-huddle
offense,
Miami
quarterback
Jacory
Harris
showed
no lingering
effects
from
the
thumb
surgery
that
kept
him
out
of spring
practice.
He was
12-of-15
passing
for
210
yards
in just
two
quarters
of play
versus
Florida
A&M.
They
also
have
a big
time
playmaker
at receiver
in Leonard
Hankerson.
The
defensive
line
looks
to be
as advertised
as they
racked
up eight
sacks
on the
night.
This
is going
to make
a great
match
up to
watch
versus
the
power
of the
Buckeye
blockers.
Ohio
State's
offensive
line
on paper
looks
to be
one
of the
nations
best.
They
operated
flawlessly
in beating
Marshall
last
week
while
opening
the
lanes
for
running
back
Brandon
Saine
and
others
to rack
up 280
yards
of rushing.
The
biggest
marble
in this
bag
is Ohio
State
quarterback
Terrelle
Pryor,
who
has
held
his
own
in two
straight
games
-- the
last
being
nine
months
ago,
Jan.
1 in
the
Rose
Bowl
-- and
is desperate
to show
the
consistency
some
fans
believe
he lacks.
When
Pryor
and
Saine
don't
deliver
points,
that
task
usually
falls
on receiver
DeVier
Posey.
This
is a
rematch
of the
2002
BCS
championship
game.
It was
the
last
time
either
teams
was
truly
title
worthy.
Both
appear
to be
so now
making
this
probably
the
best
game
of the
day.
Look
for
more
big
plays
out
of Miami
but
more
consistent
dominance
out
of the
Buckeyes.
A home
crowd
and
more
talent
across
the
board
keep
Ohio
State
in the
national
championship
early
discussions.

Michigan
30 Notre
Dame
28
This
may
be the
most
anticipated
match
up this
decade
between
these
long
time
standing
rivals.
A new
coach
for
the
Irish
and
a new
record
breaking
quarterback
for
Michigan
give
fans
much
to anticipate.
Sophomore
Denard
Robinson
marked
the
fourth
different
starter
at quarterback
in the
last
four
seasons
for
the
Wolverines.
He responded
with
a school
record
for
quarterbacks
with
197
yards
rushing.
He also
went
19-of-22
passing
for
186
yards
against
a UConn
defense
that
was
thought
to be
pretty
stout.
There
is no
question
head
coach
Rich
Rodriguez
has
found
the
type
of quarterback
he needs
to be
successful
just
like
his
track
record
has
shown.
Robinson
also
has
the
luxury
of playing
with
a veteran
offensive
line
that
looked
extremely
poised
and
dominant
last
week.
Even
the
young
defense
got
into
the
act
while
looking
fairly
stout.
With
Notre
Dame's
win
over
Purdue,
new
head
coach
Brian
Kelly
has
won
19 consecutive
regular
season
games
dating
back
to his
time
at Cincinnati.
He asked
his
new
quarterback
Dayne
Crist
to forget
about
being
a Heisman
type
of player
and
just
help
his
team.
Crist
did
just
that
and
looked
fairly
comfortable
running
this
new
spread
offense.
He has
some
good
talent
at receiver
too
with
T.J.
Jones
stepping
up last
week
to couple
with
qualified
veteran
Michael
Floyd.
The
Irish
change-of-fortunes
has
to begin
on the
defensive
side.
Not
a bad
opener
for
this
3-4
scheme
but
they
did
allow
Purdue
to dominate
the
time
of possession
and
continue
two
drives
that
lasted
15 plays.
It will
take
more
than
that
to overcome
a resurging
Michigan
team.
Although
this
is only
week
two,
Rodriguez
has
found
an offense
and
that
means
trouble
for
mediocre
defenses.
No one
can
be quite
sure
what
happens
when
Notre
Dame
has
the
ball,
as the
Michigan
defense
is still
a question
mark.
If Michigan
gets
the
same
performance
from
this
defense
as they
did
last
week,
they
sprint
out
of South
Bend
with
the
victory.
History
tells
us this
one
is going
down
to the
wire.

Some
great
cross-sectional
games
will
be played
this
weekend,
but
none
carry
the
historical
weight
and
allure
of Alabama
and
Penn
State.
On one
side
is the
winningest
coach
in college
football
history
and
on the
other
is the
defending
national
champion.
Quarterback
Rob
Bolden
became
the
first
true
freshman
to open
a season
as Penn
State's
starting
quarterback
since
Shorty
Miller
in 1910.
He did
well
versus
Youngstown
State
going
20-of-29
passing
for
239
yards.
He also
has
found
a senior
go-to
receiver
in Brett
Brackett
who
stands
at 6'6
in size
and
should
pose
some
match
up problems
for
this
rebuilt
Alabama
secondary.
The
Nittany
Lion
offensive
line
has
to do
a much
better
job
opening
holes
for
tailback
Evan
Royster,
who
only
recorded
40 yards
last
week.
Everyone
knows
Nick
Saban
can
coach
defense,
but
it is
the
Bama
offense
that
has
all
the
award
grabbers.
Look
for
quarterback
Greg
McElroy
and
Julio
Jones
to make
big
plays.
Forget
that
Hesiman
Trophy
winner
Mark
Ingram
probably
won't
play
in this
one;
Trent
Richardson
is filling
his
shoes
as expected.
Finding
a weakness
on either
side
of the
ball
for
the
Crimson
Tide
is tough.
While
the
Nittany
Lions
have
seen
their
share
of quality
competition
the
past
five
or so
seasons,
none
carry
the
weight
of this
crimson
elephant.
The
heat
and
humidity
of Tuscaloosa
combined
with
the
fact
Penn
State
is operating
with
a true
freshman
behind
center
spells
certain
trouble.
Big
trouble.
Penn
State
isn't
close
to being

will

way
Saturday
night. |

Oregon
45 Tennessee
28
While
most
ducks
head
south
for
the
winter,
these
Ducks
will
run
there
as Oregon
heads
to Knoxville
after
having
two
players
rush
for
at least
100
yards
last
week.
All
this
considering
their
Heisman
rusher
LaMichael
James
was
suspended.
James
will
return
this
week,
but
it was
Kenjon
Barner
who
is making
all
the
noise.
He rushed
for
147
yards
on 17
carries
as Oregon
crushed
New
Mexico
72-0.
Head
coach
Chip
Kelly
called
Barner,
"the
most
underrated
player
in America"
after
his
performance.
Sophomore
quarterback
Darron
Thomas
made
his
first
career
start.
He settled
in after
tossing
an interception
on the
opening
drive
but
was
pulled
after
the
Ducks
built
a huge
halftime
lead.
So it's
hard
to get
a read
on how
well
he can
make
this
offense
run.
The
defense
can
run.
With
arguably
the
fastest
defense
in the
Pac
Ten,
they
smothered
New
Mexico
holding
the
Lobos
to 107
total
yards.
The
defensive
front
line
was
dominating.
Tennessee
also
has
a steady
front
line
on defense
led
by tackle
Montori
Hughes.
It has
not
been
proven
whether
they
can
withstand
the
type
of onslaught
Oregon
brings
with
the
ball.
The
Vols
have
two
descent
running
backs
in David
Oku
and
Tauren
Poole
but
continue
to have
major
problems
behind
center.
Quarterback
Matt
Simms
constantly
was
overthrowing
open
receivers
in the
opener
with
UT-Martin.
His
top
receiver
Gerald
Jones
may
not
be available
either
after
injuring
his
hand
last
week.
This
would
severely
impact
the
offense
if he
can't
play.
Tennessee
gets
the
home
field,
which
in the
recent
past
has
not
proven
capable
of overcoming
their
offensive
shortcomings.
This
is not
the
week
to trade
points.
Are
the
Ducks
really
this
good
as the
stats
